Sophomore
Jack Holub completed the team's trifecta of broken or matched single-game offensive College of Wooster men's lacrosse records in Sunday's 17-10 win over the University of Massachusetts Boston. The game took place on Southwestern University's campus in Georgetown, Texas.
Holub pumped in nine goals, tying
Tom Bennett's single-game program benchmark that stood as a solo record since his nine-goal outing against Dickinson College in 1992. Holub hung three quick ones on UMass Boston (2-2), as it was Holub 3, Beacons 0 94 seconds into Sunday's neutral-site contest. In fact, Wooster (5-2) needed just seven seconds to strike, as senior
Owen Bosland won the opening faceoff, thanks to sophomore
Domenic Cuda's groundball. Cuda quickly found Holub on the transition to the offensive end for the game's first score.
Wooster wasted no time, getting possession back before junior
John Allen Ginder was the assister on Holub's second goal. The Scots' lead grew to 4-0 before UMass Boston scored. Sophomore
Will Crane distributed the scoring assist to senior
Lane Kellogg with a little over nine minutes left in the first.
Speaking of Kellogg, the All-American senior is now two points shy of breaking the program's all-time record of 256 that
Jim Applegate's held since 1985. Kellogg added nine points to his career mark, netting five goals and assisting on four others. The senior who broke single-game assists and points records in the season-opening win at Hiram College, has logged at least nine points in four of Wooster's seven games this spring.
The Holub and Kellogg show resumed following UMass Boston pulling within 4-2. The goal-scoring duo rattled off four straight Wooster scores, with the second Crane-to-Kellogg one of the afternoon giving Wooster an 8-2 lead with a little over a minute left in the first.
Wooster led 13-4 at halftime and 15-7 at the end of the third.
Defensively, sophomore
Case Lowery turned aside 12 Beacon shots and Wooster was credited with just three caused turnovers. Bosland was efficient in the faceoff department, winning 15-of-27. He was complemented by Cuda's contributions on the wing, which equated to seven groundballs.
Matt Hutchings was UMass Boston's standout, scoring five times and assisting on two others.
Jack Baker won 11-of-15 faceoffs.
Wooster led 48-41 in shots and had 50 groundballs to UMass Boston's 43. The teams split 30 faceoffs and had 12 saves each.
Next, Wooster plays Southwestern at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 17.
