The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team overcame Southwestern University's fourth-quarter surge by scoring the last two goals to turn away the Pirates 14-13 on Tuesday morning in Georgetown, Texas.
First-year
Owen Thompson scored Tuesday's winner with 2:45 to go. Sophomore
Will Crane found the attacker wide open in front of the net for a one-on-'keeper situation. Just prior, sophomore
Case Lowery saved a
Marshall Mohun try at putting the hosts up two.
Wooster (6-2) was forced to hold off Southwestern (4-4) twice in the final minute of the game, and the Scots got the job done by forcing turnovers both times. First, Southwestern's
Abrama Gareis tried to split a pair of Wooster defenders. Sophomore caused turnover magnetÂ
Domenic Cuda was one of them, and his check pried the ball free. In the corner, sophomore
Bennett Viverito beat a Pirate to the groundball to hand Wooster possession with 1:45 to go.
Unfortunately, a Wooster turnover enabled one final chance for Southwestern, but the Pirates ran into junior All-America
John Allen Ginder, who forced the turnover for the Scots' 13th caused turnover of the day. Cuda was lurking close to the play to scoop up the ball to secure the win.
Wooster jumped on Southwestern early, taking a 4-1 lead in the first. Senior All-American
Lane Kellogg assisted on Wooster's third goal of the day, then scored the fourth to tie
Jim Applegate for the most points in program history. Applegate's 41-year-old school record is no more, as Kellogg's goal with 12:22 remaining in the third marked point 257.
Wooster built a four-goal lead early in the fourth following back-to-back
Austin Jourde to
Sam Green scoring connections that closed the third quarter and opened the fourth. Southwestern dominated from there until the closing minutes, erasing Wooster's lead with a six-goal run. Kellogg fed Ginder for the game-tying score that occurred with 4:00 on the clock.
Kellogg's five points led the offensive production. He scored three times and passed out two assists. Ginder, Green, sophomore
Jack Holub - this week's North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week - and first-year
Alec Siegel each backed Kellogg up with a pair of scores.
Cuda topped the stat sheet in other areas with six groundballs and five caused turnovers. Senior
Sutton Ursillo added three caused turnovers and sophomore
Case Lowery made eight saves.
Matthew Houtz tallied over half the marks in Southwestern's scoring column with seven.
Trey Pena dominated the faceoffs, enabling Southwestern to stay in the game with extra possessions. He won 21-of-31 and put 17 groundballs in the Pirates' treasure chest.
Â
Southwestern outshot Wooster 41-37 and had 52 groundballs to the Scots' 41. Wooster's bright spot was limiting turnovers with just 15 miscues.
Next, Wooster starts conference play at Wittenberg University (1-6) on Saturday, March 21. Opening faceoff is at 1 p.m.
