Scots Set Tone In NCAC Opener

Men's lacrosse routes Wittenberg, 19-1

SPRINGFIELD – The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team came out of the gates ready to score in its North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, defeating Wittenberg University, 19-1.
 
Sophomore Domenic Cuda caused four turnovers, giving him 50 for the year, the third time a Scot has crossed that threshold in a single season in program history.
 
His four ground balls also put him into the top ten for ground balls in a single season. 
 
After a 4-1 first quarter, Wooster scored 15 unanswered and a 6-0 third quarter put the game out of reach.
 
Less than 30 seconds into the contest, Wooster got on the board from no other than leading scorer Jack Holub off the assist from Owen Thompson.
 
Holub scored five goals in the contest, putting him at 41 on the season, and currently is tied for 10th for goals scored in a single season.
 
Wooster rattled off three more unanswered after Holub's initial score. Lane Kellogg made it a 2-0 game with 11:58 left in the first quarter, while Holub scored again about a minute later.
 
Kellogg assisted to John Allen Ginder for Wooster's fourth score, while Wittenberg would get one back to trail 4-1 after the first quarter.
 
For Kellogg, he finished with three goals and four assists. His assist total moves to 39 on the season and pushes him up to sixth on the single season list.
 
Will Crane and Thompson got in the scoring column in the second quarter, pushing Wooster's lead to 6-1 by halftime. That would be the start of the Scots scoring 15 unanswered. 
 
Thompson added three goals, and first-year Harry Sorger added a pair.
 
Six Scots scored a goal in the contest along with Allen Ginder and Crane – Sam GreenSamuel BriggsJesse Fisherand Sutton Ursillo. It was Ursillo's first goal of the season; he also added three caused turnovers.
 
Wooster took 47 shots to Wittenberg's 24. Case Lowery was in net and made nine saves for the Scots.
 
Wooster (7-2, 1-0 NCAC) succeeded in 19-of-21 clear opportunities and forced Wittenberg (1-7, 0-1 NCAC) into 27 turnovers.
 
The Scots will return to Papp Stadium on Tuesday for its final non-conference matchup when they take on Elmhurst University at 4 p.m.
