The College of Wooster baseball team led early but could not keep pace with No. 22 Adrian College on Wednesday afternoon at Nicolay Field. The Bulldogs turned away the Fighting Scots 15-5.
First-year right fielder
Owen Sherrill went 2-for-3 out of the eighth spot in Wooster's lineup. That set the table for
Zack Barienbrock's productive day once the lineup flipped around to the top, as the junior third baseman had three RBI in the game.
Barienbrock knocked in Wooster's first run of the game in the third on a ground out that scored first-year left fielder
Bennett Grossman. Grossman walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on Sherrill's double.
Senior catcher
Colin Leslie's eighth homer over Wooster's last eight games upped the Scots' lead to 2-0 in the fourth. Defensively, Sherrill kept the Bulldogs off the board in the second, getting to a liner in right to strand a runner at third.
Adrian punched through for three in the fourth and tacked on a seven-run fifth inning.
Jake Burns' two-run homer in the fifth made it 5-2 and
Gabe Jones added on a two-run double later in the frame.
Wooster added three runs in the eighth, two of which scored on Barienbrock's opposite-field double. Sherrill singled to lead off the inning and first-year center fielder
Matt Herlick joined him on the bases with a four-pitch walk. Leslie's sacrifice fly brought in Wooster's final run.
Jones' five RBI lead all players.
Nic Bruder turned in a fine afternoon from Adrian's cleanup spot, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore
Alex Eusebio (0-2) took the loss. He allowed three runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. All five Wooster pitchers who saw time on the bump allowed at least two runs.
Ben Bates (1-0) was the pitcher of record for Adrian. He allowed a run on a hit in two innings.
Wooster is now 15-6, while Adrian improved to 12-4.
Next, Wooster starts North Coast Athletic Conference play with a Saturday, March 28 doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan University (8-8, 0-0 NCAC). First pitch is set for noon.
