Scots Battle for NCAC Win

Singles play pushes men's tennis over JCU

The College of Wooster men's tennis team fought back from being down and captured a 4-3 win over John Carroll University in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Sunday.

Wooster was swept in doubles play, putting them in an early hole. All three were close matches too.

In the No. 1 flight, Anthony VanOyen and Enzo Lopes fell 6-4, while the No. 3 team of Walker Wood and Andrew Wissman lost 7-5. The No. 2 team of Ian Royse and Bennett Dickerson played to a tiebreaker but were on the wrong end of it, falling 7-6 (3).

Wooster then took four of the singles matches to seal its third straight victory.

The deciding match came down to a three-set battle in the No. 1 flight. While VanOyen won the first set against Jean Davin, he needed to endure two long final sets to come away with the win in a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 decision.

Wooster's three other wins came in straight sets. At the No. 2 flight, Royse defeated Anthony Markello, 6-3, 6-4.

Enzo Lopes took a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 3 flight, and Walker Wood captured a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 6 flight.

Wooster also did not go quietly in its other two singles losses. At the No. 4 flight, Dickerson fell after a second set tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (0), while Wissman dropped a three-setter, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

With the victory, the Scots improve to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC. John Carroll drops to 4-6 and 0-4 in the NCAC.

Next, Wooster stays home for four straight matchups starting with a Thursday contest versus Kenyon College.
