Wooster, Wittenberg Split in Springfield

Kramer hits two homers

Fifth-inning two-run homers from senior first baseman Ryan Kramer and first-year shortstop Noah Lindberg gave The College of Wooster baseball team the cushion it needed in Saturday's 8-6 game-one win over Wittenberg University. Kramer went deep again in the nightcap, but the Fighting Scots' bats were quieted, as the Tigers won game two 8-2 at Carleton Davidson Stadium.

Wittenberg was within 4-3 when Wooster busted out the long balls to take an 8-3 lead in the opener. Junior third baseman Zack Barienbrock singled to lead off the fifth inning prior to Kramer's blast. First-year right fielder Owen Sherrill set the stage for Lindberg's seventh homer of the year with a one-out walk.

Senior right-hander Jack Spring retired the final six Tigers he faced in the win. A fly out and two grounders sent the Tigers back to the dugout in order in the eighth inning. All three Wittenberg hitters who came to the dish in the ninth flied out, two of which found Sherrill's glove out in right field.

Wooster struck for four runs in the first inning in the opener. Sherrill roped a two-run double to left field and scored when junior designated hitter Koa Siu followed with a double to left. Later, senior left fielder Nathaniel Huxtable upped the lead to four with a single to left field.

Wittenberg pulled within two in the seventh on Xander Rodriguez's two-run homer.

Barienbrock and Kramer provided the traffic on the bases at the top of the lineup, finishing with four of the Scots' 11 hits. Huxtable added two hits from the eighth spot in the lineup.

Sophomore Dame Frayne is now 5-1 after allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Wade Thewes took the loss for Wittenberg. He allowed all eight runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Rodriguez and Corbin Marshall combined for four of Wittenberg's nine hits in the opener. They had four of the six RBI.

Kramer moved within two homers of a top-10 spot in program history with his two-run blast off Mason Glen in the nightcap. However, Wooster was quieted from there, as Andrew Rust (5-0) and Zach Rust three-hit the Scots over the last eight innings and struck out 10.

Wooster senior catcher Colin Leslie cut down his 15th base stealer in 27 attempts against this spring in the first inning of the nightcap. The strike out-throw out inning-ending double play erased a one-out infield single by Landon Turner.

Kramer went 2-for-4 in game two with the two RBI. Tommy Chilicki and Marshall teamed up to go 5-for-9 with six runs and five RBI for Wittenberg.

Wooster junior Michael Scarpelli (3-3) took the loss. He allowed five runs on 10 hits in six innings. Sophomore Carter O'Neill worked a scoreless 1 2/3 innings of relief, during which he allowed one hit and struck out two.

Wooster is now 19-10 and 4-4 in the NCAC. Wittenberg is now 21-6 and 5-1 within the league.

Next, Wooster hosts Muskingum University (11-16) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 12. Prior to first pitch, the Scots will recognize the senior class.
