The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-3 North Coast Athletic Conference matchup to Denison University inside Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the result, sophomores
Jack Holub and
Domenic Cuda made a few moves in the program rankings. Holub is now tied for third in single-season goals with 50 after his third-period score. Cuda's trio of caused turnovers on the afternoon also helped him climb into third overall with 113 career caused turnovers.
Although Denison (6-7, 4-1 NCAC) hit the scoreboards first, Wooster (8-5, 2-2 NCAC) kept within striking distance, thanks to first-year
Ian Marsland's unassisted goal at the 9:32 mark. Both team's defenses held the other offense scoreless throughout the remainder of the frame. It was in the second period, however, that the game got out of hand for the Fighting Scots as the Big Red netted eight goals en route to a 11-1 halftime lead.
Wooster held the slight third-quarter advantage, outscoring Denison 2-1, thanks to back-to-back scores by Holub and junior
John Allen Ginder and then holding the Big Red scoreless for the rest of the period. However, the halftime lead was too much to overcome as Denison added three more goals to its lead in the final frame.
Ginder was the lone Scot to tally more than one point as he dished out the assist on the Holub goal. Senior
Lane Kellogg led the defensive effort with a team-high five groundballs while senior
Sutton Ursillo and Cuda contributed combined marks of five groundballs and five caused turnovers.
Three Denison players recorded hat tricks to lead the offense between first-year
Jonah Frank, senior
Macky Peck, and first-year
Teddy Hardy. Hardy tallied the most points on the afternoon, thanks to three assists as well. Senior
Grant Larson scooped a game-high 10 groundballs and went a perfect 15-for-15 on faceoffs. First-year
Luca Avelino was a menace on defense with a game-high eight caused turnovers.
Sophomore
Case Lowery was under constant pressure all afternoon, but managed a season- and game-high 15 saves in the loss. His Denison counterpart, senior
Andrew Albert, made three saves on his six shots faced.
Both teams were evenly matched in turnovers (Wooster's 19 to Denison's 20) and clear attempts (20-for-22 to 15-for-15). The Big Red dominated in all other categories such as faceoffs, groundballs, shots and shots on goal.
Wooster hosts Oberlin College (9-3, 4-0 NCAC) in NCAC action on Tuesday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m. inside John P. Papp Stadium.
