The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team got a big win on Tuesday, giving Oberlin College its first North Coast Athletic Conference loss of the year after a 12-11 win at Papp Stadium.
Â
Wooster was able to get out to a fast start and maintain its lead all the way through while holding off runs from the Yeomen in the process.
Â
An early penalty allowedÂ
Jack Holub and the Scots to get on the board first, which started a run of four straight goals from four different Scots includingÂ
Will Crane,Â
Lane Kellogg andÂ
Luke Budd.
Â
Oberlin then had a quick three-goal spurt to get them right back into the game, but a late first quarter goal from
Owen Thompson gave Wooster a 5-3 lead after one.
Â
Holub's second and final goal of the game came in the second quarter, but that broke the program's single season goal record putting him at 52 at the year. He surpasses Shaun Peirce's and Steve Davidow's record of 51, which was set in 2019 and 1990, respectively.
Â
Crane got on the board again to put Wooster ahead 7-3, but another three-goal spurt from the Yeomen cut Wooster's lead to one beforeÂ
Samuel Briggs scored with 38 seconds left in the half for the Scots to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.
Â
Both teams traded three goals in the third.Â
Baird Hruska andÂ
John Allen Ginder scored for the first time, while Kellogg notched goal number two.
Â
In the fourth, Oberlin's
Andrew Rosa scored his game-high fourth goal with 11 minutes remaining to cut Wooster's lead to one at 11-10.
Â
However, that score stayed for the next 10 minutes as both defenses stepped up, but it was Briggs off the assist from Budd with 1:41 remaining that gave Wooster the cushion it needed to knock off the Yeomen.
Â
Oberlin scored with five seconds remaining and had one last chance after a faceoff win but ultimately came up short.
Â
Domenic Cuda was a force all game, collecting seven ground balls and six caused turnovers.Â
Case Lowery reached double-digits in saves with 11 to pick up the win in goal.
Â
Wooster moves to 9-5 and collects an important NCAC win to move to 3-3. Oberlin drops to 9-4 and takes their first NCAC loss to move to 4-1.
Â
The Scots head to Wabash College on Saturday for another NCAC matchup.
