Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kellogg Now Program's All-Time Assists Leader, Wooster Tops Wabash, 10-7

Another four-decade-old program record taken down by star senior

Two College of Wooster men's lacrosse players achieved career milestones in a 10-7 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Wabash College on Saturday afternoon at Fischer Field.

Senior Lane Kellogg became the school's all-time career assists leader, dishing on four of the Fighting Scots' first five goals of the game to quickly break the record early in the second quarter. Meanwhile, sophomore Domenic Cuda became just the eighth Scot in program history to collect 200 career groundballs.

Both players climbed other program leaderboards as well. With his one-goal, five-assist performance, Kellogg now ranks second in single season assists with 53 and third in single season points with 85, where Andy Fox has led the way in both categories since 1991. Cuda tallied nine groundballs and three caused turnovers, climbing into second in both career caused turnovers with 120 and single season groundballs with 118. The sophomore also further increased his hold on second place in season caused turnovers, now at 81, tied for the fourth-most in single-season NCAA Div. III history since becoming an officially-tracked statistic in 2010.

Kellogg started his record-breaking performance by finding his teammates early often, assisting on a pair of sophomore Jack Holub goals which helped Wooster (10-5, 4-2 NCAC) out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Wabash (3-11, 1-5 NCAC) got on the scoreboard late in the period with an unassisted goal and then quickly tied the game at three early in the second frame.

The Scots had their own quick answer with rapid fire, back-to-back scores in just a 37-second span. Kellogg assisted both of those goals, one to Holub and one to senior Austin Jourde, to help him tie and then break the record by the 10:44 mark. Most of the action took place early in that period but the Little Giants added two more goals to tie the game at five heading into intermission.

Senior Luke Budd netted the only two goals of the third period, both unassisted and one within the first minute of resuming play. Otherwise, defense was the name of the frame as both teams committed a combined nine turnovers and 15 groundballs were scooped.

For over 10 minutes of the final period, it looked like the Scots would hold the Little Giants scoreless for the entire second half while also extending their lead by another two goals. However, Wabash found the back of the net at the 3:39 mark and then again with 2:08 left on the clock to put a little bit of pressure on the Wooster lead. The Little Giants even won the ensuing faceoff, sights set on overtime, but time expired after a flurry of turnovers and groundballs.

Kellogg was the game's scoring leader with his six points and got it done on the defensive end with six groundballs. Holub netted a game-high four goals while Budd added an assist to his two third-quarter goals for a total of three points. Cuda led the way defensively for the Scots once again with his aforementioned performance but sophomore Bennett Viverito was not far behind on the stat sheet with six groundballs and two caused turnovers of his own.

Both senior Jake Pippen and junior Christian Dybedock had a pair of goals for the Little Giants. Senior Bryce Poling led the defensive effort with a matching line of four groundballs and four caused turnovers.

Sophomore Case Lowery faced less pressure on the afternoon than his Wabash counterpart, junior Colin Krekeler. Lowery made five saves to Krekeler's game-high 18 stops.

Although the score remained close throughout the duration of the game, the Fighting Scots had a decided advantage in several areas, especially on the offensive end of the field. Wooster outshot Wabash 47-24 and 28-12 in shots on goal. Another standout area was groundballs, leading 52-37 in that category. Faceoffs (11-10), turnovers (26-31) and clears (21-of-24 to 20-of-28) were a lot closer, but all remained in favor of the Scots.

Wooster hits the road for the final time on Wednesday, April 22, to take on NCAC newcomer John Carroll University (2-7, 2-4 NCAC) at 7:00 p.m. inside Don Shula Stadium.
