The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team's fast and furious rally was capped by an
Austin Jourde winner, as the Fighting Scots overcame a late 10-7 deficit to stun John Carroll University 11-10 on Wednesday evening at Don Shula Stadium.
John Carroll's faceoff win following Wooster's third of four unanswered goals in the final 4:26 was short lived, as sophomore
Domenic Cuda quickly checked the ball out of
Carmine Periandri's stick and it went out of bounds, giving Wooster possession with about 1:45 to go. Upon working the ball to the offensive end, Wooster spread the field, drawing John Carroll's defense in towards the attackers in front of goal. With the defense sucked in, the wings were wide open, and that's where junior
John Allen Ginder fed a cross-field pass to Jourde for the game winner. Jourde went upstairs to the top left area of the goal for his tiebreaking score.
Wooster's offensive juggernauts teamed up for the game-tying goal, as all-time leading assister
Lane Kellogg found single-season goals leader
Jack Holub for the tying score with 1:50 to go. First-year
Jack Nolan scooped the groundball on the faceoff prior to Holub's tying score. Holub proved the offensive hero, scoring all three of Wooster's goals upon the Scots going down 10-7. Sophomore
Case Lowery made one of his game-high 12 saves with 4:16 on the clock, and that denied John Carroll a three-goal lead.
John Carroll had two chances to tie Wednesday's North Coast Athletic Conference clash in the finals seconds, but shots from
Josh Lombardo and
Casey LaForce went wide.
Wooster overcame several deficits in the game, as John Carroll led 4-1 a minute into the second period. Upon senior
Sutton Ursillo causing a turnover on John Carroll's
Braden Zarek, Wooster mounted its first comeback of the day. Kellogg found Jourde, then goals from Holub and junior
Sam Green tied the affair at four with 6:43 to go before halftime.
Later, first-year
Owen Thompson tied the game at five about four minutes into the third period and Wooster took its first lead three minutes later when a Kellogg-to-Holub goal made it 6-5. Jourde played helper on Kellogg's lone goal, which tied the game at seven in the final minute of the third.
Holub's five goals put him over 60 for the year, making him the 10th in Div. III to hit that mark this spring. Kellogg passed out four assists to go with his goal, moving him past
Andy Fox for most assists and most points in a season at 57 and 90, respectively. He is the eighth in Div. III to reach the 90-point plateau this spring and now ranks fourth nationally in assists.
Cuda scooped seven of Wooster's 25 groundballs. Cuda and Ursillo were the lone Scots credited with multiple caused turnovers in the win.
Larry Voss scored four of John Carroll's 10 goals. Periandri went 19-of-25 on faceoffs and led all players with 10 groundballs.
Devin Holder made 10 saves.
Wooster outshot John Carroll 39-37 and had five fewer miscues in the turnover column.
Wooster is now 11-5, 5-2 NCAC, while John Carroll dropped to 2-8, 2-5 NCAC.
Next, Wooster hosts Kenyon College (9-6, 5-1 NCAC) in the regular season finale at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. Kenyon's game against co-NCAC frontrunning Oberlin College (10-4, 5-1 NCAC) was halted at halftime due to the weather with the Owls leading 6-5 and will be resumed at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 23.
