A tough start to The College of Wooster softball team's North Coast Athletic Conference weekend slate on Saturday, as the team dropped a pair of games against Ohio Wesleyan University, 4-1 and 3-2.
Â
After scoring 23 runs against Otterbein on Tuesday, the Scots' offense sputtered eight hits and three runs across Saturday's doubleheader. Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan, who celebrated senior day, broke a 14-game losing streak with the sweep.
Â
In game one, Wooster's offense sparked in the seventh, attempting to rally from a 4-0 deficit. Wooster got its first three batters on, which included an RBI double from
Jillian Meszaros.Â
Â
Yet, with runners on second and third base and no one out, Wooster's next three batters were retired to close the game. Two of Wooster's four hits in the game came off the bat ofÂ
Julia Jennings.
Â
Meszaros got the start and had given up one run through five until a three-run sixth gave Ohio Wesleyan the cushion they would need. Wooster struggled against starterÂ
Olivia Basil, who struck out eight in throwing the complete game.
Â
In game two, Ohio Wesleyan took an early 1-0 lead before Wooster scored two in the top of the third. Like in game one, the Scots got its first two batters on before Jennings andÂ
Cate Barkdoll brought both home.
Â
Ohio Wesleyan answered in the fifth in a similar fashion, getting its first two runners on before a two-run single fromÂ
Rylea Gist gave the Bishops the 3-2 lead. Wooster, with six outs remaining, failed to register another hit.
Â
Wooster collected a hit each from Barkdoll,Â
Tori Conner,Â
Lynnsey Delio andÂ
Larken Koran.
Â
Conner pitched five innings and was responsible for two earned runs.Â
Makenna Knisley got the win for Ohio Wesleyan, pitching the final 4.2 innings and allowing just one hit.
Â
Wooster moves to 12-10 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC, while Ohio Wesleyan moves to 6-18 and 2-4 in conference play.
Â
The Scots will head to Greencastle, Ind. To take on DePauw University for another NCAC doubleheader on Sunday.
