GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The College of Wooster softball team lost a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference games against DePauw University, 6-4 and 4-2, on Sunday.
Wooster made it interesting in the seventh before dropping game one.
Wooster got the tying run to the plate, but their rally fell short after three runs crossed earlier in the inning.
Ella McCabe and
Emma Hetkey each had RBI doubles in the inning, but Hetkey was stranded on second to end the game as
Julia Jennings popped out to shortstop.
Junior
Tori Conner went 2-for-4 at the plate as the only Scot with a multi-hit game. However, she struggled on the mound, allowing six runs across two innings for the loss.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Hale came in to pitch the final four innings, shutting out the Tigers and allowing just three hits.
Jillian Meszaros, who got the start in game two, hit her first home run of the season in the second inning to put Wooster on the board.
In game two, Meszaros pitched a complete game, allowing just two earned runs and striking out three.
Wooster collected six hits but committed three errors in the field.
The Scots had a prime opportunity to put a dent into DePauw's lead in the top of the fifth. After McCabe started the inning with Wooster's first hit of the game, a double,
Sage Lammlein brought the run home on a single up the middle.
Wooster later brought up cleanup hitter
Cate Barkdoll with the bases loaded and two out but struck out to end the inning.
Barkdoll had another opportunity in the top of the seventh thanks to the Scots extending the inning with two outs after a walk from Conner, an RBI double from Hetkey and a single from Jennings. Representing the winning run at the plate, Barkdoll laced a ball to right field but a diving catch concluded the game.
Jennings led the Scots with a 2-for-4 game.
DePauw (18-10) stays atop the NCAC at 7-1, while Wooster (12-12) drops to 3-5. Wooster will return home for two series at home, starting with a non-conference matchup against Muskingum University on Wednesday.
