Strong Finish Enables Wooster to Pull Away from John Carroll, 13-7

Fighting Scots now 11-1 on the year

The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team outscored John Carroll University 7-3 over the final 17:37 to turn away the Blue Streaks 13-7 on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

John Carroll's (7-4, 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) Anna Vaccarelli's third of a team-high four goals pulled the Blue Streaks within 6-4 with 4:14 left in the third quarter. Following that, two Blue Streak cards gave the Fighting Scots a two-player-up opportunity. Once settled in on the offensive end, sophomore Rowan Pilon delivered a perfect pass to a cutting Mizan Jacobs for a critical score that made it a three-goal lead.

Wooster's dominance winning draw controls late helped turn the tide, as the Scots won nine of the 11 after the Streaks were within 6-4. Senior Sidney O'Rourke tracked down two following Jacobs' Scot-up goal, and Wooster scored both times, first with senior Lizzie Hardy finding the back of the net, then with sophomore Cassidy Driscoll making it 9-4 in the final minute of the third quarter.

Wooster had a neat sequence with a little over four minutes left in the contest. Jacobs snatched the ball out of midair on the draw control and scored, all within a 14-second stretch. Senior Priya Nehria was the only other player to touch the ball between Jacobs securing possession and upping Wooster's advantage to six.

Junior Audrey Richardson could not be beat down the stretch, denying John Carroll four times in the final 3:34 to tie a career-high in saves at 13. John Carroll closed in quickly following a shot that sailed wide, getting the first on-goal one of the closing stretch off from Vaccarelli just 14 seconds after Anna Spitzer's went high. A point-blank shot from Spitzer was stopped by Richardson and first-year Nicole McCalla supported the Scots' junior 'keeper by cleaning up the groundball. Richardson's final save of the day came with 34 seconds remaining, and the Scots were in position to just hold the ball from there.

Turnovers were a frequent occurrence both ways at the start, with the teams combining for 14 in the first quarter. O'Rourke's determination gave the Scots possession back twice, and the second ultimately led to the go-ahead goal. Driscoll cleanup up the groundball following O'Rourke's second caused turnover of the afternoon. A green card in transition gave Wooster a player-up opportunity, where Hardy found senior Brynne Snaguski open in front of the goal with 7:48 to go in the opening stanza.

Driscoll delivered a breakout game with career-highs in goals (five) and groundballs (six), and she matched a collegiate-best with three caused turnovers. Snaguski followed with three goals, while Jacobs tallied two. Driscoll's six groundballs were followed by four each from Jacobs and first-year Kylie MacMillan. O'Rourke won seven of Wooster's 15 draw controls to climb up to fifth in program history. Jacobs added six draws to the Saturday line.

Elsewhere, Hardy is now tied for second all-time in program history with 188 groundballs.

Vaccarelli scored four of John Carroll's seven goals. Josephine Lawler made 16 saves in the loss.

Wooster outshot John Carroll 39-28, which included a 28-13 advantage for the first three quarters. Wooster more than doubled up John Carroll 15-7 on draw controls. Wooster was 13-of-19 on clears and John Carroll checked in 19-of-27 with the tough stretch coming in the second quarter at 5-of-9.

Prior to Saturday's game, Wooster celebrated its 10-member senior class.

Next, Wooster is at Oberlin College (10-2, 1-1 NCAC) for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 15.
