A decisive 8-3 third quarter that favored The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team was the difference in the Fighting Scots' 19-13 win at Oberlin College on Wednesday evening.
Wooster (12-1, 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) had its second game of the last four impacted by weather, as Wednesday's start was delayed by just over 90 minutes. Despite the delay, it was a quick start for the Scots, as sophomores
Cassidy Driscoll and
Mizan Jacobs staked Wooster to a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.
Coming out of halftime deadlocked at eight, Wooster went to work. First-year
Kylie MacMillan cleaned up a groundball following Oberlin's draw control and was the assister on Jacobs' third goal of the night. Jacobs later scored the go-ahead goal, with that tally putting Wooster up 12-11 with 5:54 left in the third.
Jacobs won the draw control following the sophomore's fourth goal of the night, and the Scots added to the lead when Driscoll converted on a free-position shot with just over five minutes left in the third. Wooster retained possession on the draw before senior
Lizzie Hardy scooped up the groundball following a Scots' shot that hit of the post. That eventually set up Driscoll for another goal and a 14-11 Wooster lead.
Wooster scored twice more in the third, with both scores coming from senior
Sophia Mellis. The Scots kept the pressure up, as senior
Sidney O'Rourke caused a turnover and scooped up the groundball in the final seconds of the third, retaining possession with Wooster starting the fourth under this year's rules changes. First-year
Edi Fisher found senior
Brynne Snaguski to put the Scots up six, and the senior scored again to cap Wooster's 7-0 run.
Jacobs scored a co-game-leading five goals in the win, while Driscoll and Mellis both scored four. Sophomore
Rowan Pilon distributed three of the Scots' 10 assists. MacMillan contributed a four-point night with two goals and two assists, and her six groundballs and three caused turnovers were tops among Scots' players. Hardy, Jacobs, and O'Rourke tracked down 17 of Wooster's 21 draw controls. Junior
Audrey Richardson stopped seven Oberlin shots.
Mary Rodman matched Jacobs with five goals.
Olivia Mohel had four of Oberlin's 13 draw controls.
Emily Berger and
Janny McCormick combined for 11 saves.
Wooster outshot Oberlin 44-21. The Yeowomen had more groundballs at 19-15, while Wooster had the fewer turnovers at 10 to Oberlin's 16. Wooster was a perfect 17-of-17 on clears.
Next, Wooster is at Ohio Wesleyan University (8-4, 2-2 NCAC) on Saturday, April 18 for a 12 p.m. contest.
