Scots in Contention, Finish Runner-Up in 14-Team Field

Wooster Shoots Season-Best 346

The College of Wooster women's golf team led the 14-team Susquehanna University Spring Invitational for a majority of the tournament and finished as the runner-up on Saturday at the par-70, 5,524-yard Susquehanna Valley Country Club. The Fighting Scots' season-best 346 was edged out by two strokes by the host River Hawks at the very end.

Junior Abby Haywood, who tied for fifth-place at 83, kicked-started the Scots' climb to the top with a birdie on the par-4, 325-yard 18th hole, which was the lefty's fourth hole of the shotgun-started round. Haywood rode the momentum from that to play the first four holes of Susquehanna Valley's front nine at 2-over-par. Haywood logged four pars on the day to go with the birdie.

Juniors Morgan Erdmann and Paige Nicely tied for eighth-place with 85s. Erdmann followed Haywood's lead with a birdie on the par-4, 410-yard second hole, her fifth hole of the day. That started a four-hole stretch where Erdmann played at even-par, as pars went down on the par-4, 338-yard fourth hole and the par-3, 146-yard fifth hole. Erdmann played six holes at par or better.

Nicely was instrumental in keeping Wooster positioned atop the leaderboard as the tournament reached its final holes. Nicely logged four pars in a six-hole stretch, with all coming in the middle portion of the round. Nicely scored back-to-back pars on the par-4, 402-yard seventh hole and the short par-4, 297-yard eighth hole.

Junior Lizzy Hohman pushed Wooster ahead of early-round leader Kutztown University, a NCAA Div. II program, with three straight pars, come her fourth hole of the round. Hohman's run of pars started on the par-3, 143-yard third hole and her final par of the day came on the par-4, 311-yard 14th hole. Hohman's 93 was 21st in the 71-player field.

Senior Alexis Neal rounded out Wooster's lineup with a 106. Neal tied for 48th in the field.

Susquehanna's Cailyn Schall was the medalist with a 6-over-par 76. Schall was one of just three scores in the field in the 70s.

Wooster's 346 marked the team's low round of the year by seven strokes. Of note, Wooster beat four Div. II programs that were in Saturday's field.

Next, Wooster competes in Washington and Jefferson College's Peter C. Rossin Memorial Invitational, held April 13 at Southpoint Golf Club in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.
