Extremely tough conditions got the better of the entire field at Washington and Jefferson College's Peter C. Rossin Memorial Invitational, where The College of Wooster women's golf team battled to a fourth-place finish and were two strokes back of a top-three showing on Monday.
Southpointe Golf Club's par-73, 5,746-yard layout proved to be a tough test as Washington & Jefferson's
MacKenzie Schmeltz's 84 was the lone score below 89 in the field. Of the seven teams in the field, Wooster was one of four with a pair of top-10 finishers, and those came from junior
Paige Nicely and junior
Abby Haywood.
Nicely's seventh-place 92 marked a third top-10 showing out of four traditional tournaments this spring. A strong finish, which saw Nicely par both of Southpointe's front-nine par-five holes, secured the top-10 finish. She went 1-over-par on the last four holes of the shotgun-started round.
Haywood was a spot back at 93 and now has three top-10 finishes on the year. Haywood got into position for the top-10 finish with a strong start upon turning to Southpointe's front nine.
Sophomore
Sarah Buchholtz tied for 14th, which marked a collegiate-best placement. Buchholtz was Wooster's No. 3 scorer on the day, signing for a 100. She pared the opening hole, which was the par-4, 325-yard No. 11. Buchholtz held position for the collegiate-best showing with a par on the par-4, 342-yard No. 9, which was her second-to-last hole.
Junior
Morgan Erdmann rounded out the Scots' scoring contingent.
Seton Hill University's 372 was the top score. It was followed by Washington & Jefferson's 373, Grove City College's 384, and Wooster's 386.
Next, Wooster hosts the Eva Shorb Weiskopf Invitational April 19-20 at Wooster Country Club.
