Senior right-hander
Devin Anthony carried a Sunday no-hitter into the fifth inning, but a herd of Bison scored in the ninth to tie it, then host Bethany College walked off The College of Wooster baseball team 7-6 in the 12th at Bethany Park.
Anthony cruised through the first, needing just eight pitches to set down the side in order. Two liners grabbed by first-year right fielder
Owen Sherrill book-ended the second inning, where Anthony took care of the third out himself with a strikeout of
Sonny Peluchette. He worked around a two-out walk in the third, responding with a third strikeout. Three balls hit in the air in the fourth kept the no-hit bid intact.
Bethany's
Austin Samanske's surprise bunt broke up the no-no in the fifth, but Anthony responded by setting down the next four Bison before
Niko Hedit singled through the left side of the infield with one out in the sixth. Anthony exited with 5 2/3 innings pitched, during which he allowed three runs on four hits.
Sherrill's two-run single in the first gave Wooster an early lead. Junior first baseman
Zack Barienbrock started the game with a single and stole second, prior to the Scots drawing two walks that loaded the bases. Sherrill made it 6-3 in the eighth with his second two-run knock, this one a double, that scored Leslie and sophomore pinch runner
Aidan Krantz.
Bethany tied Wooster's non-conference finale at six in the ninth when
Marco Gonzalez scored on
Jaden Nestor-Fox's RBI ground out. Wooster escaped getting walked off on in the ninth, as sophomore
Max Snyder struck out
Devin Tootman with Bison on second and third.
The winning run scored when Peluchette singled to center with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th.
Dominick Bombardiere was the winning pitcher. He tossed four innings of three-hit shutout baseball. Wooster first-year
Tyler Seils (0-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed a run on two hits in two-plus innings.
Sherrill finished 3-for-4 with four RBI. Barienbrock and sophomore second baseman
Luke Rizzo had three hits each.
Heidt went 2-for-6 with two RBI for Bethany.
Wooster fell to 23-13, while Bethany improved to 24-14.
Next, Wooster (6-6 North Coast Athletic Conference) plays a crucial conference doubleheader at John Carroll University (19-12, 6-6 NCAC). First pitch on Tuesday, April 28 is at noon.
