The College of Wooster softball picked up its fourth doubleheader sweep of the season on Tuesday, defeating Ohio Northern University, 5-4 and 4-3.
Â
Wooster (18-16) received consistent hitting and pitching throughout and held off two late rallies from the Polar Bears.
Â
In game one, starting pitcherÂ
Jillian Meszaros threw a career-high 10 strikeouts as she pitched the complete game for her 14th win of the season.
Â
Meszaros settled in after a shaky first, getting out of a bases loaded jam unscathed. The sophomore did not allow a hit through the next three innings before Ohio Northern (9-27) started to gain some momentum.
Â
The Polar Bears got one across in the fifth with a bit of small ball. In the sixth, they used some two-out hitting to score again before Meszaros put a halt to that.
Â
Finally, in the seventh, two came around to score thanks to three hits and a pair of infield errors, but Meszaros left the tying run at first to end the game.
Â
Wooster's offense did its most damage in the fifth with three runs behind RBI hits from Meszaros andÂ
Ella McCabe, whileÂ
Julia Jennings scored on a failed double steal attempt.
Â
Jennings had two run-producing base knocks in the first and third innings, finishing the game 2-for-4.Â
Emma Hetkey was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.
Â
Sage Lammlein went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored, while McCabe and Meszaros each finished with two hits.
Â
In game two, it wasÂ
Tori Conner on the mound who went the distance, striking out four and collecting her fourth win.
Â
Wooster pulled out to a 3-0 lead after three-and-a-half innings. Jennings, Meszaros and Hetkey all had RBI hits.
Lynnsey Delio came through in the fifth with a single to left field to score Meszaros, making it a 4-1 game.
Â
Ohio Northern's Ellie Mason hit a solo home run in the sixth before Ohio Northern scored another in the seventh to cut the lead to one. The Polar Bears had a runner on second with one out before Conner retired the final two batters.
Â
Hetkey and Meszaros each went 2-for-4. Meszaros's RBI hit in the third was a double.Â
Jasmine Mueller went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Â
With tomorrow's games canceled due to the forecast, the Scots have Denison University next on its schedule in North Coast Athletic Conference play. If Wooster wants to make a trip to the NCAC Tournament, they'll need to take both games.Â
