Scots Lock In For Midweek Split

Baseball takes second game versus Oberlin, 12-6

After getting shutout for the first time this season, The College of Wooster baseball team bounced back with 12 runs on 11 hits to salvage a split in North Coast Athletic Conference play with Oberlin College on Wednesday.

Oberlin took game one, 5-0, while the Scots won game two, 12-6.

In game one, Wooster's offense collected just five hits and left seven on base, led by a two-hit performance from Zack Barienbrock.

For Oberlin, two extra base hits led to their first run in the third inning. Anton Shelton doubled to lead off before he was brought home on a triple from Patrick Leonard.

Wooster starting pitcher Alex Eusebio got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to keep it a 1-0 game, but Oberlin kept producing, scoring two more in the sixth before an inning ending double play turned by Maanav Bhatt at third base.

Eusebio took the loss after being relieved for in the sixth. James MacMillian pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two more runs, and Carter O'Neill pitched a scoreless ninth.

Oberlin starting pitcher Matthew Ruttkay threw 7.2 innings of shutout baseball to pick up his third win of the season. Shane McKenna pitched the final 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit.

In game two, Wooster starting pitcher Devin Anthony faced early trouble with the bases loaded but reared back and struck out the next two batters to keep a clean first.

The Scots broke their scoring drought in the first as Owen Sherrill hit a single to left-center, scoring Colin Leslie.

However, Wooster did its most damage with a six-run fourth inning, capitalizing on a bases loaded, nobody out situation. Leslie started the scoring with a two-run single to center field, while Koa Siu added a two-run single of his own.

Wooster also capitalized on Oberlin's miscues, scoring a run on a wild pitch and another on a throwing error.

Oberlin got two runs back in the sixth, but Wooster answered with one swing of the bat with the bases loaded as Barienbrock double down the right field line, clearing the bases and scoring three.

Barienbrock totaled a game-high 4 RBI, going 2-for-4 in game two. Leslie, Sherrill and Aidan Krantz each had two-hit performances as well.

Anthony pitched just the first two innings and did not give up a run. Constantine Vernadakis pitched the next three innings to pick up the win as neither of the two runs he gave up were earned.

Sherrill also was effective on the mound, allowing just one hit after pitching the final two frames.

Wooster moves to 18-9 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC, while Oberlin moves to 13-9-1 and 3-3 in conference play. Next, Wooster continues NCAC play on Saturday when they travel to Wittenberg University.
