The College of Wooster field hockey team struck first in Wednesday's 2-1 non-conference loss against Wittenberg University at John P. Papp Stadium, in what marked the rivals' season lid-lifter.

Junior Frankie Zehnal scored for the Fighting Scots in the 10th minute, beating the Tigers' Taryn Toburen in transition. The equalizer came from Maddy Krasnow in the 17th minute, when the Tigers' forward snuck a shot through traffic into the cage. Krasnow put home the game-winner in the 32nd minute, sending goal two of the night into the lower left corner from out in front of the right side of the cage.

Wooster had several big chances late, but could not tie the score. A one-on-'keeper chance was stopped by a whistle for an offensive foul inside the circle late in the third quarter. Zehnal took possession by herself down the field early in the fourth and sent a shot a little wide of the cage.

Later, the Scots inserted their first corner of the night inside the final five minutes of the contest. Following the insert, a Zehnal shot was stopped by Emily Rock. Zehnal had another look a few seconds later on a follow-up corner, as senior Audrey McKenna received the insert and fed a pass to the Scots' leading returning scorer, whose shot went wide.

Senior Nono Kauffman kept the deficit at one with two big saves in the early stages of the fourth period. On the night, the Scots' 'keeper made eight stops.

Wittenberg outshot Wooster 22-6 and led 8-3 on corners. Toburen made a save in three quarters of action, while Rock stopped the lone shot on target in the fourth.

Next, Sweet Briar College (0-1) comes up from Virginia to make a stop at John P. Papp Stadium for a noon contest on Sunday, September 6.
