Senior
Naledi Jani scored first and assisted on a game-tying goal, but visiting Marian University's ability to score consecutively quickly won out in the Sabres' 4-2 victory over the Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Both of The College of Wooster field hockey team's goals came on penalty corners. In the second, senior
Melinda Lazenby's insert resulted in a shot from junior
Frankie Zehnal from the top. The hard shot was stopped by Marian's
Emilee Clarey. The long rebound towards the wing near the edge of the circle enabled Jani a second crack at the game's opening score. Jani's goal marked the senior's tri-team-leading third goal of the year.
In the 48th minute, Jani looked to fire in a game-tying goal from the top. In the midst of the traffic, senior
Brooke Benjamin deflected the score in, which tied the game at two. Benjamin's score was the senior's first of the year.
Marian scored its first two goals in a span of less than two minutes early in the third. A pass to the post from
Clara Guivernau Ragghianti was hit in by
Shaelyn Klassen, then
Charlotte Touw scored from the wing to make it 2-1 in the 34th minute.
Touw's ability to score from range led to the winner, as she made it 3-2 in the 49th minute from the top. Touw reached five points for the game, assisting on
Cielo Martinez's goal in the 55th minute. Touw's feed towards the cage was deflected in by Martinez.
Offense was the name of the game early, as both teams had big chances in the first seven minutes. Senior
Nono Kauffman stopped three Marian shots in the opening 6:01. On the other end, Wooster sophomore
Izzie Kline's breakaway chance was stopped by
Emilee Clarey.
In the second, Jani's shot from the top hit the post and Kauffman was tested again, coming up with two more saves prior to Wooster's first goal.
Marian had 28 shots to Wooster's 13 and penalty corners were 13-4 in favor of the Sabres. Kauffman made 13 saves and senior
Emily Wachowiak added a defensive save. Clarey stopped three Wooster shots for Marian.
Marian is now 4-2 on the year. Wooster dropped to 1-5.
