WOOSTER, Ohio – In what was a very physical match between two teams hungry for a win, The College of Wooster's George Skelly scored late in the second half to give the Fighting Scots a narrow 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's soccer tilt at Carl Dale Field.
The Yeomen (5-11-0, 2-5-0 NCAC) scored an unusual goal less than two minutes into the first half to take an early 1-0 lead. Andrew Wise attempted to serve a long ball up the field to a teammate, but Wooster's (5-8-1, 1-6-0 NCAC) goalkeeper Aaron McKee, who was making his first career start, was screened by another Oberlin player and the ball rolled by him.
Wooster eventually netted the equalizer early in the second half, when Evan Severs beat the 'keeper to the right side of the net for his second goal of the season.
Then, with about nine minutes remaining in regulation, David Mallett had his shot deflected by the goalie, but Noah Wagemann was there to collect the rebound and flip a pass to Skelly, who headed in the game-winner. It was the first goal of Skelly's career.
Oberlin had some offensive chances in the final moments of the match, especially after a corner kick created a scrum around the net, but Severs and Adam Will both made nice plays to clear the ball and prevent a game-tying score.
McKee wrapped up his afternoon with a game-high seven saves and his first career victory. He was filling in for all-conference 'keeper Taylor Takacs who was out with an illness. His counterpart Brandt Rentel recorded three saves in the setback.
The Scots will look for another win Wednesday evening when they visit Hiram College at 7:30 p.m.
