Scots play first nationally-ranked opponent of season

The College of Wooster football team (4-3, 3-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) travels to first-year NCAC member John Carroll University (6-1, 5-0 NCAC) for this Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Don Shula Stadium. John Carroll is ranked No. 13 in this week's D3football.com Top-25 Poll. Wooster is coming off a 24-20 win at Ohio Wesleyan University (1-5, 0-4 NCAC), which saw junior defensive lineman Isaac LaFay (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) force a fumble at the Fighting Scots' 2-yard line. Senior linebacker Brandon Torres (Orange, Calif./Tustin) fell on the fumble in the end zone with 19 seconds remaining to secure the victory. John Carroll seized solo possession of first-place in the NCAC with a 31-27 win over nationally-ranked DePauw University (5-1, 3-1 NCAC). Nick Semptimphelter completed a go-ahead 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyren Montgomery with 14 seconds remaining.

On The Air: John Carroll will produce a livestream of this Saturday's game. The link to view it is https://northcoastnetwork.com/jcu.

All-Time Series: Wooster leads the all-time series 6-5. Wooster and John Carroll first met in 1937, a game won by the Blue Streaks 20-13. John Carroll shut out Wooster 24-0 in 2007, which is the last time the teams met.

Last Meeting: Wooster's 16-game regular season non-conference winning streak was snapped by John Carroll, which shut out the Scots 24-0 in the 2007 season opener. Wooster had won every regular season non-league competition since starting its 16-game run with a 6-0 win over Grove City College, which capped the 2001 season. Wooster had 11 players making their first career start in the 2007 John Carroll contest. First-year Wooster head coach Austin Holter made his first collegiate start in the 2007 game against John Carroll. He completed 10-of-21 passes for 107 yards and rushed for 24 net yards.

Offense Notes: Junior Michael Boyle (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) is 19th nationally with 17 passing touchdowns, a total that rates as the ninth-most in single-season program history. Boyle is three passing touchdowns shy of becoming the sixth in program history with 20 or more in a season. Boyle is 17th nationally with 1,750 passing yards, and needs 250 to log the 11th 2,000-yard passing season in program history. Senior Tate Journell (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) is sixth nationally with nine receiving touchdowns. He needs one more for the seventh 10-receiving touchdown season in program history.

Defense Notes: Senior Louie Lindsay (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro Area Senior) ranks in the top-30 nationally with 1.43 passes defended per game. Lindsay and senior Brock Sivon (Perry, Ohio/Perry) are both tied for fourth within the NCAC with four solo tackles per game. Overall, Sivon is third in the conference and in the top-100 nationally with 8.4 tackles per Saturday.

Special Teams Notes: Wooster has blocked a punt in each of its last two games. First-year Brody Snyder (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) was the latest Scot to block a punt. Sivon had Wooster's first blocked punt of the year against Denison University. First-year placekicker Nolan Hendricks' (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon Washington) 30-yard field goal against Ohio Wesleyan marked a season-best. His other make came from 25 yards out against Oberlin College back on Sept. 27.

This and That: Wooster's most famous National Football League connection is E. Blake Moore Jr., a proud 1980 alumnus. Moore signed a free-agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals and played for them from 1980-83. Moore played in Super Bowl XVI. He also played for the Green Bay Packers for two seasons. Mike Frazier, a 2003 alumnus, is in his 13th season as statistical analysis coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs. With Frazier on staff, Kansas City won Super Bowls LVII and LVIII. Bobby Vega, a 2005 graduate, is a senior personnel executive with the Baltimore Ravens.
