Fighting Scots Fall as a Result of Early Unearned Runs

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The College of Wooster baseball team took a hard-fought 4-3 loss in its first game of a three-game series at Covenant College on Friday afternoon.

Despite the loss, senior designated hitter Bryn Langley had an impressive showing at the plate. Langley started Wooster's (1-2) offense with a double in the fourth inning and scored on a single to right field from sophomore left fielder Andrew Kerr. A fifth-inning triple from Langley scored sophomore third baseman Zack Barienbrock, who reached on a single up the middle. Langley scored the Fighting Scots' final run of the day on a wild pitch in the fifth inning, which tied the game.

Covenant (3-1) took an early lead by capitalizing on a Wooster error and an RBI double from William Blosser in the first inning. After a walk and hit by pitch, Covenant walked away with three unearned runs due to the error.

Sophomore Michael Scarpelli pitched four innings with seven strikeouts.  Ben Tarpey (0-1) entered in relief in the fifth inning of the tied game. After giving up a pair of singles to both Daniel Bell and Zeke Gilbert, Tarpey surrendered a go-ahead single off Roby McClarnon's bat that put Covenant ahead 4-3.

Senior Thomas Gfell closed it out on the mound for Wooster pitching two scoreless innings.

Senior shortstop Nick Pett went 2-for-5 at the plate, while Langley and Kerr both went 2-for-4 on the day.

Covenant's Bryce Bollinger (2-0) and Christian Vander Veen combined for 12 strikeouts. Vander Veen picked up the save with four innings of one-hit shutout baseball.

Wooster takes on Covenant two more times on Saturday, Feb. 22, with the first pitch slated for noon.
