WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior right fielder Alex Gerdenich's first collegiate homer was a go-ahead two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning, but University of Mount Union counterpart Chris Tsouras responded with an eighth-inning grand slam, as the Purple Raiders snapped the Fighting Scots' winning streak at 13 with an 8-6 win on Sunday at Art Murray Field.
Wooster (18-11) started its seventh-inning rally on junior first baseman Ryan Kramer's one-out single to left field. A boot in the outfield moved Kramer into scoring position, then he moved up an additional 90 feet on a Mount Union (19-7) wild pitch. Junior designated hitter Colin Leslie tied the game with a single through the left side prior to Gerdenich's go-ahead two-run blast.
Senior right-hander Thomas Gfell (2-1) fielded a comebacker and got a force out at the plate with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. However, Wooster was unable to complete the inning-ending double play, giving Tsouras a chance. The Purple Raiders' right fielder ripped his second homer of the day, and the grand slam was the difference in the final score.
Wooster scored its first run when first-year second baseman David Guldin poked a single through the right side of the infield in the second inning. The Scots were within 4-3 in the third after Rizzo reached on an RBI fielder's choice. Prior to that, Leslie was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which forced in a run.
Mount Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Alex Stegman parked a three-run homer off the L.C. Boles Memorial Golf Course cart barn roof.
All nine starters had a hit for Wooster, which saw Kramer finish 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Wooster staffed the game in terms of pitching, starting each inning with a new arm. Scoreless frames were turned in by first-year Maxwell Snyder, junior Cooper Baer, first-year James MacMillan, first-year Carter O'Neill, sophomore Constantine Vernadakis, and Gerdenich.
Tsouras was 2-for-5 for Mount Union with five RBI. Christopher Maurer (1-0) was the winning pitcher after allowing three runs on five hits in four innings. Chris Phillips worked the final two innings for his third save.
Next, Wooster is at fourth-ranked Denison University (21-4, 5-1 NCAC) for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19. First pitch is set for noon.
