The College of Wooster men's golf team caught up to front-running Adrian College early, then ran away from the field with a convincing 10-stroke victory at the Irish Hills Invitational. Wooster posted a two-day 616 at the par-72, 6,619-yard Tecumseh Golf Club.
With the victory, Wooster extended its record run of winning at least one traditional tournament to five straight seasons. The traditional tournament era began for men's golf with the 1973 season.
Junior
Jake Cammarata was at the forefront of Wooster's Saturday charge, posting a team-best 1-over-par 73. Cammarata's play on the front nine played a large role in Wooster catching Adrian early, as the junior turned at 1-under-par, thanks to a birdie dropping on the par-4, 356-yard ninth hole. Cammarata moved to 2-under-par after birdie four of the round went in on the par-4, 367-yard 10th hole and he had a key run of five straight pars down the stretch. Cammarata tied for ninth-place at 156 and was one of four Fighting Scots in the field's top-10.
Leading the way for Wooster overall was senior
Parth Kirloskar, who logged a collegiate-best third-place finish. Kirloskar shot an 8-over-par 152 for the tournament. The senior saved the best stretch for last, shooting even-par on Saturday's back-nine. Kirloskar's birdie on that stretch came at the par-5, 502-yard 14th hole. He played 26 holes at par or better for the tournament.
Sophomore
Nunth Khamkhokgruad was next, tying for seventh at 154. Khamkhokgruad's 78 rounded out Wooster's 303 on Saturday, which marked the best team score by nine strokes. Khamkhokgruad turned at 1-over-par and had a late birdie on the par-3, 158-yard 15th hole to help the Scots secure the team title. His 76 led the Scots on Friday, where the sophomore went 1-over-par over the final eight holes.
Junior
Andrew Carey was next, matching Cammarata with a 156 for ninth-place. Carey ran a par streak of 13 straight holes to a Saturday 77. He was at even-par through 13 holes Friday, when the junior dropped in birdies on the par-4, 388-yard fifth hole and the par-3, 178-yard 13th hole.
Sophomore
Max Shulman rounded out Wooster's lineup and tied for 22nd-place at 165. Shulman's 81 was Wooster's No. 4 Friday score. He had 14 pars in Friday's round.
Host Adrian took runner-up. Spring Arbor University's
Zachary Koch was the medalist with a 4-over-par 148.
Next, Wooster competes at the Guy V. Kuhn Allegheny College Invitational, held Sept. 21-22 at The Country Club of Meadville.
