Senior Salute - Devin Anthony

Anthony is member of baseball team

Throughout the spring semester we are highlighting our senior Fighting Scots with a Senior Salute series. Today's featured senior is baseball's Devin Anthony. Anthony is a business economics major.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose Wooster for the strong baseball program paired with one of the most robust senior capstones in the country. I knew this would set me up well for whatever it was I wanted to pursue after college.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: It means giving your best effort regardless of circumstances while supporting others and knowing they are doing the same for you.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories are our spring break trips to Florida, traveling abroad to play baseball in Italy while seeing Rome and Florence, and getting to tap into my passions through various class offerings along with choosing my own topic for I.S.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part is knowing the support you have from your teammates and all the other athletes.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am a trustee in the Jenny Investment Club, where I help manage a $15 million student-run portfolio focused on U.S. mid-cap growth stocks. We consistently rank in the top-20 for portfolio value of college student-managed funds.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Professor Philip Mellizo because he brought a fun, lighthearted energy to each class driving my interest in behavioral economics.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: My coach and teammates have helped me stay on top of my work, hold me accountable, and to be the best version of myself each year.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I am looking into financial literacy, behavioral biases, and the persistence of sports betting after promotional incentives. My work examines existing literature around the definition of financial literacy and tests if it is a successful mitigator in persistent gambling on sports after a promotional sign-up offer window expires. I am designing my own survey to collect specific data relating to financial literacy and probabilistic numeracy abilities. My survey investigates how these correspond to certain behavioral biases and ultimately persistence in gambling behavior.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Baseball took two trips to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and made the championship round in one of them. I was able to pitch in both NCAC Tournaments. We traveled to Italy to play a couple of teams and went on a 13-game winning streak my junior year. My studies and experience as a business economics major led me into a sales and marketing internship this past summer for Howmet Aerospace in Cleveland where I was fortunate to work along some of the brightest minds in the aerospace industry. I was also fortunate to work on some meaningful revenue and forecasting projects for some big-name customers.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: My advice is meet different people and branch out, pursue your interests, discover what your interests are, have confidence and put yourself out there, and stay where your feet are. Focus on having fun in the moment and not worrying about what the future holds.
