Scots Climb to Third Behind Erdmann's Co-Collegiate-Best

Senior shoots a 76, headlined by an eagle

Senior Morgan Erdmann's co-collegiate-best 76 propelled The College of Wooster women's golf team to its first top-three finish this fall at John Carroll University's Fall Invitational, which took place Saturday and Sunday at the par-72, 5,676-yard Manakiki Golf Course. The Fighting Scots finished the two-day tournament at 695.

Erdmann was the tournament's runner-up, shooting a 161, finishing two back of Ursuline College's Zaria Hampton for medalist honors. Erdmann dropped in an eagle, knocking in a putt from the fringe of the par-5, 424-yard sixth hole. It marked the program's first eagle since classmate Abby Haywood's as a sophomore at Grove City College Fall Invitational.

Erdmann's eagle dropped the senior to 1-over-par, and she turned Sunday at 2-over-par. Erdmann followed both of her back-nine bogeys with immediate birdies, securing the co-collegiate-best 76 with a birdie on the par-4, 319-yard 18th hole. Erdmann's other circle on the card came at the par-3, 138-yard 11th hole. Her 76 was the low round for the tournament and one of just three rounds in the 70s logged by the entire field. The senior opened with an 85, ending the round strong with pars on three of the final four holes. Erdmann's previous 76 came in the first round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships as a first-year on Westfield Country Club's North Course.

Haywood's 175 tied for 12th in the weekend field. Haywood opened with an 85 and closed with a 90. The senior turned in a strong back nine Saturday, scoring par on five of the first six holes, including both of the par-3s in that stretch. Haywood played Saturday's par-3 holes at even par. She hit back-to-back pars on the consecutive par fives on Sunday's back nine.

Senior Paige Nicely was next, carding a 178 for the 36-hole event. Nicely placed 17th after rounds of 92 and 86. The senior followed her round-one birdie on No. 11 with a par on the par-5, 460-yard 12th hole. Sunday's round was off to a strong start for the senior, who drained an early birdie on the par-5, 451-yard No. 3 and played holes three through seven at even par before scoring pars on the first three holes of the back nine.

First-year Emme Braunsdorf tied for 18th at 181. Braunsdorf's Saturday 91 featured a four-hole stretch at 1-over-par, thanks to a birdie on No. 11. On Sunday, Braunsdorf closed strong on the front side, playing holes six through nine at 1-over-par, with pars dropping on six, the par-4, 370-yard eighth hole, and the par-4, 329-yard ninth hole.

Senior Serena Grenga rounded out Wooster's lineup, placing 44th at 210. Grenga's tournament was headlined by a four-hole run of pars on Saturday, that started on the par-4, 307-yard fourth hole. Grenga pared both of Manakiki's par-3 holes on the front on Saturday.

Ursuline won the six-team event with a 675, edging host John Carroll by a stroke.

Next, Wooster wraps up its fall slate at the Cleveland Cup, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University, October 18-19.
