Throughout the spring semester we are highlighting our senior Fighting Scots with a Senior Salute series. Today's featured senior is men's lacrosse's Austin Jourde. Jourde is a business economics major.
Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose Wooster mostly for athletics, but also for the small community and close relationships with professors.
Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: It means a lot. I need to be a role model for the men's lacrosse team while also balancing schoolwork with a rigorous schedule. Having this opportunity to be a student-athlete in college is something special that not a lot of people can say they did. I am grateful to be a Fighting Scot.
Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I have always loved our spring break trips as a lacrosse team. My favorite memory was beating Colorado College as a first-year when all of my hometown family and friends came to watch.
Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: Having a group of around 45 people who I can always rely on no matter what. It is truly something that I will always cherish.
Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I was part of the club hockey team as a first-year and sophomore.
Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Philip Mellizo because he made me truly believe in myself inside and outside of the classroom. He made economics a more enjoyable major.
Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Dr. Peter Abramo always brought the energy to class, which made it fun to show up every day. Nate Huston is probably the most important person in my athletic career because he has been there through thick and thin, and always with a smile on his face.
Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My I.S. is about the commercial real estate sector and how office space valuations changed since the pandemic.
Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: As an economics student, it was hard to find a finance internship, but I was an investment banking intern at U.S. Capital Advisors the summer going into my senior year in Houston, Texas. It was an experience like no other due to living alone and realizing that finance is extremely different than business economics.
Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: Enjoy the process because there are going to be major ups and downs. Smile through it all and being confused is okay.
