Senior
Mark Towns' runner-up showing and team-leading 3-over-par 75 on Monday vaulted The College of Wooster men's golf team from fourth to second at the program's annual Nye Intercollegiate, which took place Sunday and Monday at the par-72, 6,545-yard Wooster Country Club. Wooster's second-round 308 was the second-lowest team round of the tournament for the entire field.
Towns was in position for a strong finish with a round-one 76, which led Wooster's lineup on Sunday. The senior's final home tournament started with a birdie on the par-5, 491-yard opening hole and he got back to 1-over-par with a birdie on the par-5, 534-yard seventh hole. Towns' birdie on seven kicked off a stretch of seven straight holes at par or better. In round two, Towns gave himself a chance for medalist honors with a late birdie on the par-4, 400-yard fourth hole, which was his second-to-last of the day. Towns carded four birdies in Monday's round, including one on the par-4, 310-yard No. 15, featuring Wooster Country Club's daunting two-tier green. The birdie on No. 15 brought Towns' round to even-par through 10 holes.
Juniors
Andrew Carey and
Jake Cammarata backed Towns' Monday 75 up with 76s to help shoot the Scots up the team standings. Carey tied for 18th at 158. He played Wooster Country Club's front nine of the shotgun-started round at even-par, draining back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and the short 377-yard second hole. Carey played 14 holes at par or better on Monday and 26 of the 36 for the tournament.
Cammarata bounced back from an opening-round 88 for a 32nd-place 164. His Monday 76 featured an even-par front nine with birdies coming on No. 4 and the par-3, 168-yard eighth hole. Twelve of Cammarata's 18 Monday holes were played at par or better. The junior's tournament started with book-ended birdies on Wooster Country Club's front nine on Sunday.
Sophomore
Nunth Khamkhokgruad was Wooster's No. 3 score, shooting a 159 for a top-20 placement in the field. Khamkhokgruad's Sunday 78 was Wooster's No. 2 score in the lineup. He was at 1-under-par following a birdie on No. 7 and played six of the first seven holes of the tournament at par or better and 11 for the first round. Khamkhokgruad shot a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine on Monday.
First-year
Jack Kinder rounded out the lineup and tied for 32nd with a 164. Kinder turned in a strong showing on Sunday with a 79. That was spearheaded by seven pars on the back nine and a 2-over-par 38. Kinder's start was equally as impressive with four pars on the opening five holes. Round two saw Kinder play holes 16 through two at 1-under-par, with his birdie coming on the par-4, 314-yard 16th hole.
Sophomore
Max Shulman led Wooster's b team and individuals with a top-10 finish. Shulman carded a 154 and was steady throughout, evidenced by rounds of 76 and 78. Shulman was 1-over-par at Sunday's turn and fired off five more pars upon reaching the par-3, 177-yard 10th hole. He carded three birdies in Monday's round.
Otterbein University won the nine-team event with a 609. Wooster finished 14 strokes back of the Cardinals and two clear of third-place Allegheny College. The Cardinals'
Ian Morgan was the medalist at 150. He shot a 1-under-par 71 on Monday.
Next, Wooster is off to York College's Spartan Spring Invitational, which takes place April 20-21 at Country Club of York in Pennsylvania.
