Scots Still Vying for Top-Five Conference Finish

Wooster four back of fifth with one round to go

Strong finishes have The College of Wooster men's golf team still in contention for a top-five North Coast Athletic Conference finish, as the Fighting Scots played Saturday's back nine at 12-over-par overall and 9-over-par within the team score of 315. Wooster remains in seventh place at the conference championship with one round remaining at the par-72, 6,896-yard Avalon Golf and Country Club's Avalon Lakes course. The Scots sit four strokes back of fifth-place Ohio Wesleyan University.

First-year Arnav Choudhary led Wooster's Saturday efforts with a 5-over-par 77. Back-to-back birdies on the par-5, 513-yard 14th hole and the par-4, 372-yard 15th hole moved Saturday's score to 3-over-par. Choudhary finished at 2-over-par on the just-shy-of 3,500-yard back nine. He played 11 holes at par or better on Saturday and is tied for 27th at 161.

Senior Mark Towns was next with another 78, playing the final 15 holes at 3-over-par. Towns strung together five straight pars on the front nine and played the final eight holes of the round at even-par, with birdies on the 186-yard 12th hole and No. 14. Towns' 156 leads Wooster through two rounds and is in the top-20 of the field.

Junior Andrew Carey and first-year Musa Shariff both shot 8-over-par 80s on Saturday's round. Strong back nines from both were key to keeping Saturday's round together, as Shariff went 2-over-par on the back and Carey 3-over-par. Shariff was one of three Scots to birdie No. 14, and he played six holes at par or better on the back nine. Carey finished 1-over-par for his last four holes and played the first four of the round at 1-over-par. Shariff is tied for 21st at 158 and Carey 27th at 161.

Junior Jake Cammarata rounded out Wooster's lineup with an 81. Cammarata fired a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine. He settled in to shoot 2-over-par for his last 11 holes, which started with a birdie on the par-3, 174-yard eighth hole. Cammarata is 40th at 169.

NCAC newcomer John Carroll University leads the eight-team field at 598. The Blue Streaks carry a nine-stroke lead over Kenyon College into Sunday's final round, while Wittenberg University sits 10 strokes back after a field-leading 6-over-par 294 on Saturday. Individually, DePauw University's Andrew Wall leads the race for the Coach Bob Nye Award, given to the men's individual medalist. He sits at even par.

Sunday's round starts no earlier than 9 a.m. due to anticipated frost in the area overnight.
