Haywood, Nicely Match Season Lows on Saturday

Wooster up to sixth at NCAC Championship

Junior Abby Haywood's co-season-best 79 led The College of Wooster women's golf team to a 350 on Saturday at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship. Wooster finished round one and completed round two, overtaking Ohio Wesleyan University along the way to move up to sixth at 712. Round three of the championship at the par-72, 5,644-yard Avalon at Squaw Creek in Vienna, Ohio, is set for a no-earlier-than 9 a.m. start on Sunday.

Haywood, in 13th at 164, capped round one, which was suspended due to weather, with four straight pars, and is 7-over-par for her last 22 holes at the championship. Haywood's strong finish to round one saw the junior go 3-over-par on Squaw's back nine and she was 4-over-par in round two with a run of six straight pars, starting on the par-4, 278-yard 12th hole. Haywood turned at 3-over-par in round two, knocking down a birdie on the par-4, 283-yard seventh hole. Haywood played 13 holes at par or better in round two.

Junior Paige Nicely's 85 went a long way in Wooster's round-two bounce back. It matched Nicely's season low. She secured it with a nice birdie on the par-3, 132-yard finishing hole, which she pared earlier in the day completing round one. She continues to play well on the par-3 holes, sitting at 2-over-par for the two rounds. Nicely carded a birdie and seven pars in round two. Nicely is tied for 25th at 179.

Junior Morgan Erdmann is tied for 20th after rounds of 86 and 87. Erdmann was off to a strong start in Saturday's second round, making six pars on the front nine, and playing holes two through eight at 1-over-par. Two late pars dropped for Erdmann upon resuming round one earlier in the day.

Sophomore Sarah Buchholtz, who had her round finished prior to Friday's suspension of play, rounded out the 350 with a 99. Senior Alexis Neal shot a 101 for round two.

Denison University is in prime position for another NCAC title, leading the seventh-team field by 17 strokes entering Sunday's final round. Kenyon College is second, while Wooster carries a four-stroke lead for sixth over Ohio Wesleyan into Sunday. Kenyon's Rafaela Plasa is the clubhouse leader with a 5-over-par 149. Plasa leads by two strokes over Denison's Siena Maschke for medalist.
