The College of Wooster men's cross country team's balance among classes is perhaps its biggest asset entering the 2026 season. With a strong pack of runners projected to post similar times, veteran head coach Dennis Rice is looking for a few Fighting Scots to emerge as frontline contributors when it matters most, the championship portion of the season.

"Each class is going to have an impact within our team concept, and it is going to balance the program out really well," said Rice. "We should have a really great training pod with this group. This is an exciting group that is going to really continue to develop and progress as we go through the season. We have true balance mixed in with the incoming first-year class, along with our sophomores, juniors, and seniors."

Wooster's returners certainly understand the messaging heading into the season as six of the men's top seven at last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Championships posted collegiate-bests at the conference meet and numerous personal-bests were improved upon a few weeks later at the NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Regional.

Wooster's junior class possesses the most championship experience within the program, as Basil Keck and Grant Mentzer are the top returning finishers from last year's conference team.

"The junior class has gotten better each season," said Rice. "They've done a really nice job both training wise and with the overall development with volume and base work. Basil and Grant have become more consistent with their racing and we need them to take another step. We need some front runners to be able to really excel at the championship level."

While Keck and Mentzer are the leaders among the returnees, Rice sees the program having "a mix of people throughout the season" occupying the top finishing spots within the team and is confident the program will "be able to stabilize our top two to three runners come championship time."

Other returning juniors are Trace Graf, James Marquis, and Andrew Rombach. Rombach earned a letter last fall as part of the Scots' contingent at the conference championship.

Wooster's senior class, consisting of Scott Crawford, Yann Kariningufu, Eion McKernan, Nick Schade, and Avidor Wolkenberg "has made a strong commitment to our program over the years," per Rice.

"Our seniors bring excellent leadership, great team energy to the team, and are going to set the tone for us in competition, training, and with what we do in the classroom," shared Rice.

Schade is one who could have a breakout season as a senior captain. Kariningufu and Wolkenberg are the men's other captains.

"Nick is excited to take on a leadership role within the team concept," added Rice. "I feel strongly that is going to carry over to both his training and his competitive results."

Crawford and Kariningufu are other returning letterwinners from the senior class.

"Our junior and senior returning letterwinners enhance the culture of our program," said Rice. "They know what is expected of the entire team in training sessions and set the tone for building the energy and enthusiasm for the whole program as we go through the season."

Wooster's sophomore class has the talent and potential to claim the frontrunner roles for the program as the season goes along. Rice is high on the class being able to impact the team now and help set a strong foundation for future seasons.

Tyler Frye and Max Kollhoff are the leaders of the sophomore class, which also includes Aaron Krabacher and Kaedyn Yonker. Frye was a letterwinner last year and earned All-Ohio honors on the distance medley relay. Kollhoff was a midyear transfer and earned All-Ohio laurels in his debut collegiate track and field season.

"The key for our sophomores is to continue to get experience and build confidence both in their training and in races," said Rice. "We have some talent in this class that can really impact the program."

Gabe Coble, Josh Janssen, and Owen Neville join the program as first-years.

"We are excited about this first-year class coming in," said Rice. "Our ultimate goal is to get them settled in academically and with our training philosophy. We expect this first-year class to make an impact within our team as we go through the season."

Wooster's season starts with the program's annual Wooster Invitational on Tuesday, September 1 at L.C. Boles Memorial Golf Course. The meet starts at 6 p.m. Wooster is headed to Tiffin University (September 11) and Ohio Wesleyan University (October 2) for meets, changes from the slate of prior seasons. The NCAC Championships take place Saturday, October 31 at Oberlin College and the program hosts its annual Twilight 5K Challenge under the lights at John P. Papp Stadium on Friday, November 6.

"Our season kickoff sets the tone for cross country, wrapped up Rice. "We enjoy hosting a meet annually on that first date available for NCAA competition."
