Box Score The College of Wooster field hockey team dropped its non-conference finale 1-0 to Immaculata University on Friday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium.
Immaculata's goal came from
Gabrielle O'Brien in the 24th minute. The Mighty Macs inserted a penalty corner to
Jillian Vandenbraak at the top. O'Brien cut inside from the top to secure position in front of the cage, received the pass from Vandenbraak, then spun and fired in the goal through traffic from about three yards out.
The efforts of
Mackenzie Shrack kept Wooster off the board in the 36th minute. Wooster sophomore
Frankie Zehnal worked the ball through the Mighty Macs' defense and fired off a shot from range upon crossing into the circle. The rebound was played out to the top, where senior
Lizzie Hardy sent the ball right back in. Junior
Allie Toombs made a play on the ball for a deflection, and the ball was on track to enter the cage until Shrack's diving stop with her stick sent the ball past the end line.
Following Wooster inserting a penalty corner, Hardy had a shot that was deflected up over the top of the cage by the defense in front.
Wooster's next strong offensive sequence came in the final 2:30 of the third quarter. Zehnal's back-hander was knocked down by Shrack. However, the Mighty Macs' backs were nowhere to be found, leaving junior
Brooke Benjamin one-on-one with Immaculata's 'keeper. Two Benjamin shots were saved by Shrack before the Mighty Macs were able to regain possession.
Immaculata had a 23-13 advantage in shots in the stat sheet. The Mighty Macs doubled up the Fighting Scots 10-5 on corners.
Senior
Cate Barkdoll and junior
Noa Kauffman each played a half in goal. Kauffman stopped five shots, while Barkdoll tallied three saves. Schrack ended the day with eight saves.
Wooster fell to 2-7, while Immaculata improved to 5-10.
Next, Wooster (2-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) resumes conference play at DePauw University (7-3, 3-0 NCAC) on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
