Big Nights from Kramer, Krantz Power Wooster in Nightcap

Scots split with Petrels on opening day

Senior first baseman Ryan Kramer finished an RBI shy of The College of Wooster's first eight-RBI game since 2010, and the All-American led the Fighting Scots to a 14-1 seven-inning rout of Oglethorpe University in the nightcap of opening day. Wooster fell 11-7 to Oglethorpe in Friday's opener.

Kramer staked Wooster (1-1) to a 2-0 lead, ripping an opposite-field homer in the top of the first inning. The right-hander made it 10-1 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. Kramer's run-producing base knock plated senior right fielder Nathaniel Huxtable, who was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on a stolen base. Kramer's last blast of the day was a three-run homer, as he parked one over the left field fence to cap the Scots' four-run seventh.

Wooster broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six times to take a 9-1 lead. First-year shortstop Noah Lindberg walked, stole second, and scored the first run on an Oglethorpe (1-1) throwing error. Sophomore center fielder Aidan Krantz laced a single through the left side of the infield to score Huxtable, who reached on a walk. Following Krantz swiping second and third base, the Scots loaded the bases on a walk by junior third baseman Zack Barienbrock and a hit-by-pitch while senior catcher Colin Leslie stood in at the dish. Kramer drew a bases-loaded walk before junior designated hitter Koa Siu plated a pair with a two-run single to right field. Lindberg capped the scoring with a bases-loaded walk.

Krantz swiped four bases in the nightcap, coming up one shy of the program's record, which was last matched by alumnus Nick Pett against Thiel College in 2024. Kramer went 3-for-4 during his 7-RBI game, and he scored three times. Krantz added two hits, two runs, and two RBI to the four swipes, and Barienbrock touched home three times.

Sophomore Dame Frayne (1-0) was dominant, allowing a run on two hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work. First-year Tyler Seils worked out of a jam for a scoreless seventh in his collegiate debut.

Ryan Causey accounted for Oglethorpe's run with a round-tripper. Dylan Quintillo (0-1) took the loss. He was roughed up for seven runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Wooster's opener was off to a promising start, as the Scots led 6-1 after the top of the fifth. Wooster struck right away, as Siu and junior center fielder Andrew Kerr drew bases-loaded walks in the first inning.

Huxtable deposited a RBI single into center field in the fourth, and Barienbrock did likewise to right field to up Wooster's lead to 4-1. Lindberg plated Kramer on a sacrifice fly in the fifth before sophomore second baseman Luke Rizzo darted home on a wild pitch that made it 6-1.

Oglethorpe got to junior Michael Scarpelli (0-1) in the fifth, and the Petrels scored seven times to take the lead. Trey Kinnan drove in two with a double and Will Weaver motored around the bases for a two-run triple.

Scarpelli retired the side in order in the first inning and faced two over the minimum through four. Rizzo started an inning-ending double play behind the junior right-hander to erase a one-out walk in the fourth inning. Things changed in the fifth, as Scarpelli was charged with seven runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Parker Spring (1-0) took the win for Oglethorpe, as he entered in the fifth inning. Spring allowed two runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Barienbrock, Kramer, Rizzo, Siu, and Huxtable all had two hits in the opener. Leslie threw out one of two would-be base stealers.

Weaver reached base safely four times and had three RBI to lead the victory.

The team's wrap up the three-game series on Saturday. First pitch in Atlanta is scheduled for 1 p.m.
