Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The College of Wooster softball team opened its season in Kentucky on Friday with a pair of losses, falling to Spalding University 10-4 and Transylvania University 8-0 in five innings.
Wooster needed to shake off the rust after a long offseason in its first game against Spalding, but a bad first inning set the tone for the rest of the game.
After the Scots went down in order in the top of the first, junior starting pitcher
Tori Conner walked three batters and hit another, while the defense behind her committed three errors. All of that supplied Spalding with a 6-0 lead after one inning.
Wooster tallied their first runs with two outs in the fourth when senior
Ella Wolff tripled to right field to plate two. After four innings, Wooster trailed 7-2.
Spalding tacked on more runs in the fifth and the sixth, while Wooster scored twice more as well, with RBIs from seniors
Julia Jennings and
Cate Barkdoll.
Wooster collected eight hits in the game. Wolff and Conner each finished 2-for-3. Conner lasted five innings on the mound in the loss, while sophomore
Kaitlyn Hale pitched one inning of relief.
In game two, Wooster's offense struggled to get going. They collected just two hits, both of which came in the fourth inning behind singles from Barkdoll and sophomore
Sage Lammlein.
Transylvania scored two in the first and another in the second before a three-run fourth opened up the game.
Malana Hamm finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore
Jillian Meszaros gave up all eight runs in 4.1 innings pitched but was not helped with three infield errors. Senior
Lynnsey Delio recorded the final two outs.
Wooster will continue play at Spalding on Saturday. They take on Coe College in game one at 11 a.m. before facing the host Golden Eagles again in game two at 3:30 p.m.
