Women's Golf Tunes Up For Spring Season

Fighting Scots traveled to Hilton Head Island

The College of Wooster women's golf team tuned up for the spring season with a training trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Wooster's first practice round took place at Cotton Dike, the first golf course created at Dataw Island. The Tom Fazio design is built over terrain coaxed from marshes by a series of dikes, intended to create more land for cotton fields during the great plantation days of Dataw Island. Strategy and accuracy were paramount to navigate the layout, as half of the holes lie along the marsh and Jenkins Creek.

Next, Wooster practiced at The Golf Club at Indigo Run, where alumna Melissa Burtscher aced the par-3, 130-yard 17th hole in 2024. Indigo Run is the first signature course to be co-designed by a father and son team, with that team consisting of Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II. Indigo Run is also the last golf course built on Hilton Head Island.

After taking in Savannah's signature Saint Patrick's Day Parade, Wooster practiced at Palmetto Hall Plantation's Arthur Hills Course. Arthur Hills was almost instantly named to Golf Digest's list as one of America's Top 10 New Courses when it opened in 1991. Undulated fairways with lots of mounding wind through heavily wooded forests of moss-draped oaks and towering pines that frame the fairways on most holes. Large greens, with bunkers butted up against the sides, made approach accuracy paramount.

Following Arthur Hills, Wooster stopped at Bear Creek, Rees Jones' first solo design that features a dogleg on nearly every par 4 and par 5. Bear Creek earned the distinguished Audubon Certification.

Wooster's second-to-last round took place at Moss Creek Golf Club's Devil's Elbow South Course. The club is a testament to the early greatness of Tom Fazio, who designed the entire complex. The Lowcountry landscape is accented by large ponds and water tributaries with tidal salt marshes at the edges. Moss Creek is home to Hilton Head area's only private mainland marina.

Wooster's trip concluded at Belfair Country Club's west course. The traditional parkland-type course is dotted with beautiful oaks and soaring pines. Subtle elevation changes test every skill level and one of the holes features two separate green options.

Wooster's spring season starts at the Muskingum University Invitational on Sunday, March 29.
