NCAC Tournament Preview: Men's Soccer

NCAC Tournament Page

Tournament outlook: The College of Wooster men's soccer team (11-1-6, 3-1-4 NCAC) earned the No. 3 seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and will play in the semifinal at No. 2 seed and 15th-ranked Denison University (13-1-3, 5-1-2 NCAC) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. DePauw University (10-2-5, 5-0-3 NCAC) earned the No. 1 seed and will host No. 4 seed Kenyon College (7-3-7, 3-2-3 NCAC) on the other side of the bracket. The championship will take place Saturday (time TBA) at the highest remaining seed.

Media coverage: Fans can follow along Wooster's tournament run through the available live stream and stats pages provided by the host school.

About the last meeting: On Oct. 8, Wooster tied with Denison, 1-1, when the Big Red was the third-ranked team in the country. Senior Elliot Miller put Wooster ahead in the 27th minute, as Denison allowed just their fifth goal of the season up to that point. Yet, Denison was able to hit the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Denison outshot Wooster 19-5 as sophomore keeper Eddie Glucksman made four saves.

Season outlook: Wooster enters the tournament riding one of its best seasons in over 20 years, having picked up just one loss, which came in late October. Their 11 wins is their most since 2004 when the team went 13-3 and 8-1 in the NCAC, claiming a share of the NCAC regular season title. It's also the first time the Scots have reached double-digit wins since 2006 when the team finished 10-4-2. Wooster has five shutout wins to its name this season and entered conference play at 8-0-2. However, the competition has gotten stronger late in the season, as Wooster is looking for its first win since Oct. 22 after a 2-1 win at Oberlin College. They've scored just twice in their last three games, going 0-1-2, but have done enough to enter the NCAC Tournament for the first time in 21 years. Against tournament teams, they fell to Kenyon but tied Denison and DePauw.

Finding a way to score: Wooster has completely reversed their fortunes from a year ago after a 7-9-2 record and a 2-5-1 conference record for a tie of seventh. What is even more apparent is their goal differential going from 17-35 to 36-18 – almost doubling their scoring and halving their goals given up.

Key factors: Miller has turned in another All-NCAC caliber year, leading the squad with 22 points on eight goals and six assists. He is tied for third in the conference in goals and solely in third in points. Three players have reached double digits in points this year, including Connor Shea (5g, 4a) and Aris Christodoulou (6g, 0a). Both are also in the top 10 of the conference in points. Six others have scored two or more goals this season. A year ago, Miller led the team with eight points on four goals.
Meanwhile, Glucksman has played all but 90 minutes in goal this season, collecting 41 saves and 1.06 goals against average. That has about halved last year's goal against average score of 1.94. Recently, he made a career-high 11 saves in the team's 2-2 tie against Ohio Wesleyan University.

Wooster's NCAC Tournament history: Since the tournament's inception in 1999, Wooster has only made it three times, from 2002-2004. All three times they were the No. 1 seed. The first year the Scots tied to Ohio Wesleyan, failing to advance in penalty kicks. In 2003, they reached the championship game but was again snubbed by the Bishops. Then in their last appearance in 2004, they were upset 1-0 to Allegheny in the semifinal, who later went on to claim the conference's NCAA Men's Soccer Championship bid.

How last year's NCAC Tournament shaped out: Ohio Wesleyan and Denison were season co-champions last year only for DePauw to sneak in as the No. 4 seed to claim the tournament title. DePauw defeated Ohio Wesleyan 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals before advancing 4-1 in penalty kicks in the championship game over the Big Red. Denison defeated the No. 3 seed Kenyon 2-1 in the semifinals. All four teams would make the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship with Denison being one of the final eight teams.

A quick look at the NPI: The NCAA Power Index (NPI), which determines the NCAA Championship selection process, had Wooster as high as 33rd earlier this season but currently ranks Wooster 60th of 406 teams. This means a tournament championship is likely a must for the Scots to break into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992.

Ticket Information: For the semifinals and finals, ticket price is $7 for adults and $3 for children and those 18 and under. NCAC students with a valid institution ID will be admitted free of charge. More information on how to purchase tickets is still to come.
