Box Score 2 Four Fighting Scots –
Anthony VanOyen,
Bennett Dickerson,
Santiago Medina and
Ian Royse - traveled to Indiana to compete in the ITA Division III Men's Central Regional Championships this past weekend.
The rest of the team went to Denison University to play in the Big Red Invite.
First, at the ITA's, which kicked off Friday, VanOyen started singles play with a near comeback victory against
Jesse Yang of the University of Chicago, but ultimately fell 6-2, 7-6 (6).
VanOyen and Dickerson teamed for the doubles portion but could not get much going. They suffered an 8-3 loss to
Drew Koval and
Nathan Tam of Washington University of St. Louis. Then, on Saturday, they went to the consolation bracket but fell to North Central College's
Henry Ros and
Philipp Wottgen, 8-2.
VanOyen returned Saturday to pick up a pair of singles consolation wins. VanOyen captured a win over Kalamazoo College's
Tristan Bonanni, 6-0, 6-2. He then followed that with a come from behind win over Adrian's
Michael Mascarin, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (6).
Also on Saturday, Medina and Royse found success in singles competition. The first-year Medina captured a win for the Scots, defeating Adrian College's
Jaxon Nejedlik, 6-3, 6-0. The junior Royse did the same, defeating
Alexander Burns of Franciscan University of Steubenville, 6-4, 6-2.
Royse then defeated
Tyler Fenton from Baldwin Wallace University in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while Medina took a tough loss to
David Hill of Wheaton College, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5).
Royse continued with a win over
Connor Schultz from Albion College, 6-2, 6-1 before finally taking a loss to
Joao Vitor Espindola from Lake Forest College, 6-2, 6-4, to end his run.
At Denison, the team saw plenty of competition on Saturday with seven total teams present.
In doubles play,
Sammy Jang and
Max Stratford took a 6-2 win over Otterbein's
Arthur Porto and
Nathan Walter.
Yet, Wooster lost its other two doubles matchups on Saturday with
Martin Hauschild and
Andrew Wissman falling 7-6 (7) to Findlay and
Jack Currie-Welch and
Thomas Ishikawa falling to Wilmington, 6-0.
In the first round of singles competition, Ishikawa found a singles win over Ohio Northern's
Roberto Mucarsel, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7).
Three Scots fell in third set super tiebreakers. Hauschild fell 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (5) to Findlay, Currie-Welch took a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (9) defeat to Wilmington, and Stratford lost 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (7) to another Findlay player.
Jang lost in straight sets to Otterbein, 6-1, 6-1, and Wissman lost 6-3, 6-4 to Wilmington.
In the second round of singles play, Wooster captured three wins between Currie-Welch, Stratford and Ishikawa.
Currie-Welch defeated Findlay's
Conner Nguyen 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (2). Stratford won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, against Otterbein's
Nathan Walter, and Ishikawa won 7-6 (8), 6-3 against Otterbein's
Nikita Kitaev.
Jang fell to 6-1, 6-2 to Wilmington while Wissman took a tough loss to
Austin Asada of Ohio Northern, 6-1, 6-7, (6), 1-0 (6).
Next, the Scots will host their own Wooster Invite on Sunday.
