Box Score The College of Wooster men's tennis team failed to find the upset over 26th-ranked Oberlin College on Friday, falling 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCAC Men's Tennis Championships.
Â
Held at Denison University, Wooster (10-7) entered as the sixth seed against the third seeded Yeomen. Oberlin (15-6) also rose in the ITA rankings from the last time the Scots played them on April 12, moving up eight positions.
Â
The match started with a fight for the lone doubles point after the first two matches split.Â
Ian Royse andÂ
Bennett Dickerson rose to the occasion in the No. 2 flight, taking a 6-3 win. However, in the No. 1 flight,Â
Anthony VanOyen andÂ
Enzo Lopes fell 6-4.
Â
The No. 3 flight saw
Andrew Wissman and
Walker Wood in a 4-4 stalemate while holding service. Wooster strung some points together but a volley into the net gave Oberlin a crucial game point. Wooster was unable to break a strong serve from Oberlin's side as the Yeomen took the match 6-4 and secured the doubles point.Â
Â
From there, the bottom of Oberlin's singles lineup proved too much for Wooster as all three flights finished in similar fashion.
Â
Oberlin picked up its second point in the No. 4 flight whereÂ
Cameron Weiss defeated Dickerson, 6-1, 6-0. Wissman fell 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 flight, and Wood fell 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot.
Â
The top three flights proved competitive before being forced to end due to the match already being decided.
Â
At the No. 1 flight, VanOyen was in the middle of a first set tiebreaker, which he was winning 5-3. At the No. 2 flight, Royse lost a close first set, 6-4, and was even at 1-1 to begin the second set.
Â
For Lopes in the No. 3 flight, he held a 6-3 advantage after the first set but trailed in the second set, 4-1
Â
Oberlin advances to the semifinals to take on second-seeded Kenyon College. In the day's earlier match, DePauw University defeated Wabash College, 5-0 and will take on top seed Denison University in the semifinals.
Â
For Wooster, their season is not quite over yet. They will host Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday for its final match of the year.
