Throughout the spring semester we are celebrating our senior student-athletes with a Senior Salute series. Today's featured senior is softball's Emma Hetkey. Hetkey is a communication studies major.
Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose to attend Wooster because it felt like home. The people and the atmosphere are always very welcoming and warm.
Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: Being a Fighting Scot student-athlete means being invested in becoming a better student, a better athlete, and a better person.
Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories include going to Spain with the softball team, sled riding with my friends every winter, filling Kauke Arch with snow, bus rides with the team, and finals week studying with friends.
Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part is having the opportunity to seek higher education while continuing the sport I love. Also being able to do that surrounded by the love and support of my team.
Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am involved with the Dance Company, Alpha Psi Omega, The Hidden Opponent, Future Alumni Network, and the Communication Club.
Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Zhenyu Tian because he was my first communication studies professor and encouraged me to be a teaching assistant in the communication studies department which gave me some amazing opportunities.
Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: APEX was helpful in guiding me through the entrepreneurship pathway. I also utilized the peer advising and writing center appointments and found that everyone was helpful and kind every time I went looking for help.
Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My Independent Study is a rhetorical analysis of the media's depiction of women in entrepreneurship.
Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I had the opportunity to travel to Akron and work with the Northeast Ohio Student Venture Fund for a class on angel investing. I made a lot of great connections and was able to walk through the process of due diligence on a company you might want to invest in.
Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: Do more. The time here flew by quickly and you should do everything you can because it will be worth it in the end.
