Women's Lacrosse off to York for NCAA Div. III Championship

Wooster plays Farmingdale State in first round Saturday

The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team is in the field for the NCAA Div. III Championship, earning one of the at-large spots. Wooster (16-2) travels to York, Pennsylvania, site of NCAA first- and second-round action May 9-10. Wooster plays Farmingdale State College (9-9) in Saturday's first round at noon with the winner playing host York (15-4) in the second round at 1 p.m. on May 10.

Ticket information and Media Coverage: Ticket prices are $6 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, $3 for students (includes College of Wooster students), and $3 for children ages 3-12. Children under three are free. York College is credit cards only for ticket purchases. York will stream and provide live statistics for the games in its pod.

NCAA History: This is Wooster's eighth appearance in the NCAA Div. III Championship and second straight appearance. Wooster previously made the national field in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2025. Last spring, Wooster defeated Hope College 20-9 in the first round to win a NCAA Tournament game for the first time in program history. Wooster became the first college in Ohio to host a women's lacrosse NCAA Tournament game on May 4, 2004, when the Scots played Nazareth College at Carl Dale Memorial Field in the first round.

Scouting York: York enters the Div. III Championship on a nine-game winning streak and is ranked ninth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll. York has played nine games against nationally-ranked teams this spring, most recently dispatching nationally-ranked Messiah College 11-5 in the championship game of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament championship. Sydney Mentzer leads the team with 50 goals and 76 points. She is also tops in draws (88), caused turnovers (26), and among the team leaders in groundballs (27). In goal, Audrey Simoes saves 51.7 percent of shots faced and has a 7.75 goals-against average.

Scouting Farmingdale: Farmingdale is in the championship field as the winner of the Skyline Conference Tournament. Farmingdale beat United States Merchant Marine Academy 10-8 in the championship game of its conference tournament. The Rams' Carly Livingston has over 100 points on the season, scoring 57 times and assisting on 49 others. She is involved on nearly 56 percent of the Rams' goals, as the team only has 191 scores on the year. Goalkeeper Giavanna Stamatelo has a 10.31 goals-against average and a 48.3 save percentage.

Building on History, and Chance to Match it Saturday: Last year was a historic season for Wooster's women's lacrosse team. The Scots' first-ever NCAA Championship win was the program's 17th, marking a record for wins in a season. A first-round win this year would match the 17-win total and give the program its second NCAA Tournament victory. Wooster has won at least 11 games in nine straight full seasons (2020 and 2021 are exempted from this streak, per NCAA guidelines, as 2020's season was halted due to COVID, and the team only played 10 games during a modified 2021 season). This is the first time Wooster has won at least 13 games in back-to-back seasons in program history.

One of the Last Three: Wooster started its season 10-0 before Denison snapped the winning streak with a 17-9 victory over the Scots on April 8. Wooster was one of the last three remaining undefeated teams in Div. III this spring, joining national powerhouses Middlebury College and Salisbury University.

As High as No. 10: Wooster ranked as high as 10th in this spring's NCAA Power Index (NPI), which was used when it came time to select teams for the NCAA Div. III Championship on Sunday night in advance of Monday's online selection show. Wooster slipped to 16th in the ones used for the selections due to its 19-10 loss to Denison in the championship game of the NCAC Tournament. The NPI is a system that houses the division's statistical data and objectively applies the selection criteria based on the sport committee's established weighted criteria. NPI is a combination of the following: winning percentage, strength of schedule, home-away multiplier, quality win bonus, and overtime results (when relevant).

Find Yourself a Hardy: Hardy became Wooster's all-time leader in draw controls this spring and recently hit 400 in the semifinal win of the NCAC Tournament. Her 125 draw controls and three shy of alumna Hannah Shaw's 128 from 2022. At 56 goals, Hardy is tied for the sixth-most in program history, while her 68 points are just shy of a top-10 season mark. Hardy has 61 groundballs this spring, tied for the fifth-most in single-season program history. Hardy's 141 goals rank just outside the program's all-time top-10. She is the second player in program history to scoop over 200 groundballs.

Top-10 Scorer: Senior Brynne Snaguski (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) is tied for the team lead with 57 goals this spring, three shy of Ellie Hudson-Heck's single-season record of 60 from a decade ago. Snaguski is one of three Scots with at least 50 goals this spring and that has led to Wooster ranking second in Div. III in goals per game. Wooster broke its program record for most goals in a season in Saturday's loss at Denison.

Two in the Top-Five: Wooster's dominated the draw controls of late, with the entirety of the program's top five graduating within the last eight seasons (includes this year's graduating class). Draw controls have been an officially-tracked NCAA statistic since 2000. Senior Sidney O'Rourke (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) is now in the program's all-time top-five with 250, the fourth-most in program history. O'Rourke tracked down 94 in 21 games last year and an impressive 83 over 15 2024 outings. This spring, O'Rourke has 67 draw controls, third on the team behind Hardy and sophomore Mizan Jacobs' (Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Preparatory) 75. Wooster is second nationally with 17.50 draw controls per game.

Century: Senior Sophia Mellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) recently surpassed 100 points at Wooster and was the hero in the NCAC Tournament, scoring the walk-off free-position goal just before the horn sounded in the fourth period of Wooster's 18-17 win over Kenyon College. Mellis is three goals shy of tying Hudson-Heck's single-season school record and three shy of hitting 100 for her Wooster career.

Show Stopper: Junior Audrey Richardson (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) is averaging career-bests in goals-against average (9.54) and save percentage (41.6) this spring. The junior is at 275 career saves and has logged over 100 stops for the second straight spring. Richardson is in the program's top 10 for career saves.

The Helping Stick: Sophomore Rowan Pilon (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) has rode a strong finish to the regular season to being on the verge of the program's single-season assists record. Pilon has passed out 42 helpers and needs one to tie and two to break Britta Treu's single-season mark from 2023.
